A major international genetics study has found that one personality trait may be linked to spending more time in the hospital, highlighting the potential influence personality can have on health outcomes. Researchers identified more than 1,200 genetic variants associated with the 'Big Five' personality traits: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. These variants were linked to a range of life outcomes, including health, longevity, education, career paths, and income. The study, led by the Revived Genomics of Personality Consortium, combined data from 46 research cohorts worldwide. Participants provided DNA samples and completed questionnaires measuring the Big Five traits.
The researchers found no single gene responsible for personality but uncovered hundreds of genetic variants contributing to how people think, feel, and behave. Ted Schwaba, lead author and assistant professor at Michigan State University’s Department of Psychology, explained that while individual genetic variants have small effects, their combined influence is more substantial. One key finding was a link between genetic variants associated with neuroticism and longer hospital stays. Neuroticism involves experiencing more negative emotions like anxiety and sadness. Consultant psychiatrist T. Ayodele Ajayi noted that individuals with higher neuroticism may present with more complex conditions requiring additional assessment or treatment. Greater sensitivity to stress and psychological distress can also complicate recovery.
The study also revealed overlaps between personality genetics and mental/physical health, longevity, education, and career outcomes. For example, genetic variants linked to conscientiousness were associated with increased daily activity, while those tied to openness to experience and extraversion were linked to night owl tendencies. Researchers found personality, genetics, and environment interact rather than operate independently. For instance, genetic variants linked to openness influenced moving to cosmopolitan neighborhoods, potentially reinforcing personality traits.
Schwaba emphasized that while genetics play a role, environment also shapes personality. The findings suggest studying personality genetics could inform research in medicine, health, education, and the workplace. The study underscores personality’s relevance across various fields and encourages further interdisciplinary research.
